The color red’s meaning changed over time from a symbol for life into one for deep emotion. Early cultures used red roses to decorate marriage ceremonies. This practice turned the red rose into a symbol of love and fidelity. Trivia- the modern red rose was introduced by China in the 1800’s.
Pink Roses are one of the longest existing roses known. When first cultivated, the majority of roses were in shades of pink. The pink rose is associated with grace and elegance; the light pink rose with gentleness (it can also be used to express sympathy).
In the 18th century, yellow had a negative reputation. As a result, the yellow rose became a symbol of jealousy and dying love (not what you’d expect from a rose). Eventually, it’s meaning went back to being positive (joy and friendship). Trivia- the earliest cultivated yellow roses didn’t have the sweet fragrance of other roses.
